AIMS AND REASONS OF THE PROJECT

Description of the Problem:

Our environment is polluted and the World is destroyed day by day. In this sense, we aim at raising environmental awareness in the neighborhood, recycling the garbage, facilitating to separate the domestic wastes by designing smart dustbins.

MAIN REASONS:

1-      That the people do not have environmental awareness

2-      That the district managers do not work enough upon the garbage separation

3-      That the industrial enterprises leave the wastes without separating them

4-      That the schools do not give environmental education enough upon separation and recycling awareness

ROOT CAUSES:

1-      That people are insensitive towards garbage separation

2-      Difficulty in separating the wastes at home

3-      Infrastructure deficiency by Municipalities

4-      Lack of recycling bins in the neighborhood

5-      That the wastes of hospitals, fabrics etc. are not inspected healthfully.

6-      That the owners of the fabrics do not take enough precautions.

7-      Inadequacy of studies at schools.

8-      Lack of exemplary behaviors of the adults

HYPOTHESIS:

The most important solution suggestion in our Project study, “Raising Recycling Awareness of Public”, is to design smart dustbins in order to separate the domestic wastes conveniently. We assume that we can heighten the public upon waste separation with flyers, brochures and seminars.

In this connection, we have conducted polls so as to ascertain the public’s knowledge upon recycling.

INTERVIEW QUESTIONS OF ENVIRONMENTALIST SEAGULLS PROJECT OF 5TH CLASS USKUDAR ELEMANTARY SCHOOL

1- Importance of waste subject is constantly increasing. Recycling the wastes both prevents solid waste areas to be occupied and provides financial gain. In this sense, what kind of works will you do as a Municipality?
Answer 1: 425.2 tons of package waste is collected in our district on an average. Initially, we have started to collect package wastes from the gated community as it is pilot district. Glass wastes are collected separately from other package wastes with glass bank. Glass banks have been renovated since September, 2010. 14.07 tons vegetable waste oil has been collected monthly within Uskudar borders.

We have provided these works to be published in the billboards by informing directorate of press upon environmental values calculated weekly from package waste data in order to have elementary schools in Uskudar collected waste batteries and to get them adopt a habit of collecting batteries with the campaigns arranged every year regularly.

2- What kind of activities are arranged by the Municipality for recyclable wastes such as glass, paper, metal, wooden, plastic, textile products etc.?
Answer 2:
Environmental Education Project:

11.413 students in 43 schools were educated by specialist engineers in the fields in 2011 within the context of Environmental Education Project.

As of 2012, Package Waste Collecting Contest and Wasted Battery Collecting Contest have been done among the schools in the context of “Environment is in Your Hands” Project.
