AIMS AND REASONS OF THE PROJECT
Description
of the Problem:
Our environment
is polluted and the World is destroyed day by day. In this sense, we aim at
raising environmental awareness in the neighborhood, recycling the garbage,
facilitating to separate the domestic wastes by designing smart dustbins.
MAIN REASONS:
1- That the people do not have
environmental awareness
2- That the district managers do not
work enough upon the garbage separation
3- That the industrial enterprises
leave the wastes without separating them
4- That the schools do not give
environmental education enough upon separation and recycling awareness
ROOT CAUSES:
1- That people are insensitive towards
garbage separation
2- Difficulty in separating the wastes
at home
3- Infrastructure deficiency by
Municipalities
4- Lack of recycling bins in the
neighborhood
5- That the wastes of hospitals,
fabrics etc. are not inspected healthfully.
6- That the owners of the fabrics do
not take enough precautions.
7- Inadequacy of studies at schools.
8- Lack of exemplary behaviors of the
adults
HYPOTHESIS:
The most important solution suggestion in our
Project study, “Raising Recycling Awareness of Public”, is to design smart
dustbins in order to separate the domestic wastes conveniently. We assume that
we can heighten the public upon waste separation with flyers, brochures and
seminars.
In this connection, we have conducted polls so
as to ascertain the public’s knowledge upon recycling.

GENERAL RESULTS
1- Regarding the question “Do you think
that the recycling is individually beneficial?”, while the first poll result
was 60%, it has become 75% in the last one. Comparing the both results, it
appears that the rate for individually benefit increases.
2- Regarding the question “Do you think
that the recycling is beneficial for environment?”, while the first poll result
was 65%, it has become 75% in the last one. Comparing the both results, it
appears that the rate for environmentally benefit increases.
3- Regarding the question “Do you think
that the recycling is beneficial for the national economics?”, while the first
poll result was 50%, it has become 70% in the last one. Comparing the both
results, it appears that the benefit rate for national economics increases.
4- Regarding the question “Is there
recycling potentiality in your neighborhood?”, while the first poll result was
10%, it has become 60% in the last one. Comparing the both results, it appears
that the answer “Yes” to the question has increased due to the recycling bins
that we have placed in the site.
5- Regarding the question “Are the
recycling potentialities in your neighborhood easily reachable?”, while the
first poll result was 10%, it has become 60% in the last one. Comparing the
both results, it appears that the answer “Yes” to the question has increased
due to the recycling bins that we have placed in the site.
6- Regarding the question “Do you use
the recycling bins in your neighborhood?”, while the first poll result was 10%,
it has become 90% in the last one. Comparing the both results, it appears that
the answer “Yes” to the question has increased due to the recycling bins that
we have placed in the site.
7- Regarding the question “Do you separate
the wastes at home?”, while the first poll result was 5%, it has become 95% in
the last one. Comparing the both results, it appears that the answer “Yes” to
the question has increased due to the recycling bins that we have placed in the
site.
8- Regarding the question “Do you
purchase a bin separating the wastes automatically if it is sold?”, the first
and last poll results were both 90%. Considering these results, it appears that
the automatically waste separation bins are required in the site.
9- Regarding the question “Have you
come across any placards or billboards upon recycling in your neighborhood?”,
while the first poll result was 50%, it has become 95% in the last one.
Comparing the both results, it appears that advertising awareness in the site
is inadequate and we have closed the gap.
10- Regarding the question “Will you
participate in a recycling campaign actively in your neighborhood if it is
organized?”, the first and last poll results were both 98%. Considering these
results, it appears that dwellers participate in the campaign actively and
support the Project upon recycling.
AS A RESULT;
If the
awareness of people is raised by bringing the recycling into question
constantly and the wastes are separated by smart recycling bins at home or in
the neighborhood, the people support the process actively.
1-
Importance of waste subject is constantly increasing. Recycling the wastes both
prevents solid waste areas to be occupied and provides financial gain. In this
sense, what kind of works will you do as a Municipality?
Answer
1: 425.2 tons of package waste is collected in
our district on an average. Initially, we have started to collect package
wastes from the gated community as it is pilot district. Glass wastes are
collected separately from other package wastes with glass bank. Glass banks
have been renovated since September, 2010. 14.07 tons vegetable waste oil has
been collected monthly within Uskudar borders.
We have provided these works to be
published in the billboards by informing directorate of press upon
environmental values calculated weekly from package waste data in order to have
elementary schools in Uskudar collected waste batteries and to get them adopt a
habit of collecting batteries with the campaigns arranged every year regularly.
2-
What kind of activities are arranged by the Municipality for recyclable wastes
such as glass, paper, metal, wooden, plastic, textile products etc.?
Answer
2: Environmental Education Project:
11.413 students in 43 schools were educated by specialist engineers in the fields in 2011 within the context of Environmental Education Project.
As of 2012, Package Waste Collecting
Contest and Wasted Battery Collecting Contest have been done among the schools
in the context of “Environment is in Your Hands” Project.
3-
How much income do you generate in a year due to recycling?
Answer 3: We haven't done income
quantization yet.
Answer 4: We do not have recycling facility
in our district. However, we are planning to build a waste carrying center for
each neighborhood.
5-
Do we have enough waste separation boxes in every street of our district or do
you have a plan upon this issue?
Answer 5: We have started to work on
collecting package wastes with containers in the streets. We are collecting the
wastes with blue garbage bags in certain days and hours.
6-
Does the Municipality work for raising public awareness upon recycling with
brochures, flyers, bill boards?
Answer 6: Our Citizen Notification Team has
posted 3587 notices in 108 main streets and home streets upon
Cleaning-Environment and Waste until the Spring Clean.
